Knowing gossip of
Raine's pregnancy will erupt sooner or later in the small town, Gin's reflex is
to grab the suitcase and escape to a new city, a new life. But with each
passing day, Gin's feet stay rooted in Banister Falls, and she falls a little
more for this local firefighter who shows her not all men abandon women at the
first sign of smoke.
As Gin and Dan do
the best they can to guide the two teenagers through their early entry into
adulthood, they discover together that romance can bloom in the rockiest of
situations. And God can turn the pieces of a broken past into a beautiful new
beginning. "

Kathryn did a wonderful job of this story of two people from
the opposite sides of the track stepping out of the stereotyping. As I read
this book I was torn between two sets of main characters.
Raine is a normal
17yr old girl who is once again the new girl at school. She is not as fortunate
as most in the school and it treated as such. Being matched with Cody as her
class partner forces them to spend some time with one another. Raine must fight
the urge to run as she has learned from her mom. In time they become faced with
some pretty serious adult situations. I am not sure that most 17-18 year olds
would have handled quite as well as they did. I commend these young adults for
their maturity.
Gin who has raised Raine solely by herself for the past 17 yrs
is a strong but not so confident woman. She is persistent in being there for
Raine unlike her mom was. When Cody’s mom turns to Dan for some help the last
thing she expected was for Dan to be concerned about Gin’s feeling in all of
this. This small religious town was not quite prepared for what was coming. Can
Gin let the past go and learn to open her heart and risk being hurt once again?
Will the sort things out before it is too late?
